Invisalign

If you are unhappy with your over-spaced, overcrowded or oddly positioned teeth, but unwilling to let big, bold braces take over, then try Invisalign. This subtle but highly effective treatment uses tailor-made aligners to gradually move your teeth to their desired position. It’s a great option for adults and teenagers who may feel self-conscious about wearing glaringly obvious fixed braces. Also as there are no braces and wires, you’ll spend less time having adjustments.

The real advantage of Invisalign is that the straightening process goes on ‘behind the scenes’ as the aligners are virtually invisible, comfortable and you can even take them out. This means you can keep your teeth and gums really clean and indulge in all kinds of tasty food as there’ll be no restriction on what you can eat. You can also put them to one side for special occasions so you really can just get on with your life.

How it works

Firstly, we will check if you are a suitable candidate for this innovative treatment by taking an impression of your teeth and, if so, we will use 3D technology to create a personalised plan so you’ll be able to see exactly how you teeth will look during and after the process.

When they have been made you will receive your first set of aligners which are simply and comfortably positioned over your teeth. You will then wear a different custom made aligner every week until the controlled force gradually shifts your teeth into the desired position. Invisalign not only controls the level of movement for each aligner, but also how long it takes. This means at each stage, only certain teeth are allowed to move, as prescribed by your personalised plan. During the treatment period we will keep an eye on the progress of your teeth to make sure they’re moving in the right direction.

Invisalign can treat a whole range of issues, from minor tooth movements to much more involved cases. Even younger teenagers whose teeth haven’t fully erupted can be treated with the specially formulated Invisalign Teen – a variation of the adult version with added teen-friendly features including:

  • indicators that fade from blue to clear to help everyone know exactly where they are in the process
  • design elements that compensate for the eruption of canines, second premolars and second molars
  • six free individual replacement aligners – just in case they go missing!

Does it hurt?

You may experience some minor discomfort for a few days, when a new aligner is fitted at each stage of the treatment, however this is normally just a feeling of pressure and a good sign that the treatment is working.

How long will Invisalign take?

The process will vary depending on your case, but most treatments are completed in 6-12 months.

Remember Invisalign will only work while you are actually wearing your tailor-made aligners and we recommend that they are worn day and night for a minimum of 20–22 hours – this shouldn’t be a problem as you’ll probably hardly notice that you’re wearing them because without wires and braces there is much less irritation to teeth and gums.

Following treatment you will have to wear a special retainer to maintain your new straighter smile. This is an essential part of the process, especially as you won’t want to undo the all-new alignment of your teeth. As with all orthodontic treatments, if you don’t wear a retainer, teeth can slowly move back to their old ways so it’s a good idea to protect your smile by retaining your teeth in their new position.
